Early on, our idea of beauty meant applying mom’s discarded Clinique eye shadow samples in brilliant, striped rainbows across our tiny five-year-old eyelids or crawling onto her vanity and chopping our baby-blonde hair into self-imposed jagged bobs. Despite well-stocked Caboodles, early efforts to take part in the adult world of beauty may have been misguided—as we imagine everyone’s have been at some point—but it means after a lifetime of playing with products we’ve learned what works to make us feel most beautiful. After writing about beauty for print magazines for a combined 10 years, we realized our passion for this industry was not a passing phase.
With Beauty Bender we are combining our love of all things beauty with our discerning editorial backgrounds to create content that is stimulating, enlightening and relevant, both in words and images. We will be sharing this with you Thursdays via email as well as on beautybender.com. We’re going straight to the source for experts whose insights teach us something new every day, and tapping the talents of renowned photographers, makeup artists and hairstylists to produce drool-worthy eye candy in our monthly editorial photo shoots. We break down the most worthy runway and real-life beauty trends; celebrate skin-altering hero products; dive into the makeup bags of industry personalities to reveal how they stay beautiful; and compile a library to help navigate the millions of products on the market. Here we’re distilling this oft-overwhelming world into a curated, aesthetically driven resource for those who love to look their best.
After meeting at an editorial internship with Angeleno magazine in 2006, we became fast friends and kept in touch as we each completed our degrees in journalism the following spring. We then logged years on staff as editors with Modern Luxury Media (Alexis at Angeleno and Kathryn at Riviera), covering luxury lifestyle, though we found beauty to be our favorite beat. In the meantime we sharpened our reporting skills contributing to publications such as the Los Angeles Times and The Hollywood Reporter. Alexis then went on to complete a Master’s in contemporary art history and curating from the University of Southern California, while Kathryn recently left her role as deputy editor of Los Angeles Confidential and currently serves as FOAM magazine’s senior editor.
