For the hot months ahead, turn to emerald’s creamy cousin, jade, for your nails
With everyone on a high about Pantone’s Color of the Year, Emerald, we’re finding it hard not to want to wear the color everywhere. But for the warm weather ahead, the muted, milky hue of jade seems more tropically appropriate and transitions perfectly into warm climates. “One of the best aspects about the 2013 Pantone Color of the Year—Emerald—is that its gemstone composition has many facets and dimensions. This shade, perfectly balanced between blue and green, works well with every skintone and gives way to many related shades, including jade,” says Sephora’s PRO Team Artist Helen Phillips. “Jade, as a color, is an extension of emerald so it’s a natural choice for the summer months with its slightly lighter and brighter hue.” Lacquer options can vary from the more pistachio flavored like YSL’s new spring Jade Imperial to the minty like Nails Inc’s Haymarket. Dior’s limited-edition Nirvana is much bluer in tone (as is YSL’s new-for-summer Vert D’Orient), while Illamasqua’s Nomad is the perfect bright jade.
Drew Barrymore, Alexa Chung and Rachel Bilson have all sported the trend, as well, pairing their jade nails with neutral tones like black and heather gray. However, the milky hue also complements summer’s citrus brights like orange, coral and fuchsia—in both clothing and cosmetics. “During the spring and summer months, we always want to lighten and brighten up our polish choices to celebrate the new season,” says Phillips. “Usually, we bring out our neons and pastels because it enhances our sun-kissed skintones and complements our lighter apparel. Donning a jade nail polish like the Sephora by OPI Nail Colour in Read My Palm is a great way to still be on trend with the Color of the Year while updating it for the new season.”
