Fall’s eye-catching oxblood shade isn’t only for the lips—there’s a whole other world of burgundy beauty awaiting experimentation

According to whatever source you look to or follow, there’s no question—that rich shade of vampy plum red is the shade of the fall. It’s true in fashion, and it’s true in beauty. And it’s not just a lip color. “A dark lip is bold,” says celebrity (Eva Mendes, Chloe Sevigny, Kristen Bell), editorial and runway makeup artist Robin Black. In addition, “these colors are beautiful when used around the eye. Blue, green or hazel eyes pop with a touch of burgundy around the lash line or swept over the lid; brown eyes look lovely with a plum smoky eye or eggplant liner.”

Perhaps one reason this tone has become such an instant hit is that there’s an iteration perfect for every single woman. Black advises: “Experiment with different undertones such as warm brick shades or cool-toned burgundy to find out what works for your coloring.”

When it comes to “fall’s biggest lip trend,” there’s also a way to make it work for everyone—even those who don’t feel so adventurous. “If you’re uncomfortable wearing an opaque dark lip, choose the deepest, darkest, boldest lipstick you have always wanted to wear and apply it precisely using a lip brush. Let it sit while you apply the rest of your makeup, blow-dry your hair or paint your toes,” she says. “Then, blot it off and finish the look with a coat of lip balm for a sophisticated take on the trend.” Black’s favorites include YSL Rouge Pur Couture in Noir Laque, Chanel Rouge Allure in Rouge Noir, Tom Ford’s Black Orchid Lip Color and Dior Rouge Haute Couleur in Hypnotic Red. When wearing such a statement lip, “keep the rest of your makeup minimal and modern. Use a tinted moisturizer to neutralize any redness, skip the blush but definitely do a contour, brows should be groomed, and sweep on a bit of blackest-black mascara.”

The black-cherry shade, which is popping up in fall cosmetics collections by the likes of Chanel, Lancome and Giorgio Armani, isn’t only apropriate on the lips. The eyes can be a very alluring place for a deep wine shade (one of our all-time favorites is Chanel’s Ombre d’Illusion cream shadow in Ebloui), as can the digits. “I love a matching lip and nail—it reminds me of the glamorous women in Helmut Newton and Guy Bourdin photographs,” says Black. Additionally, we may even see it spread to our manes. Says the makeup expert, “With the growing trend for unusual hair colors, I’m sure we will see Bordeaux ombres, dip-dyed reds and streaks of plum this season.”
